Can I volunteer?

A Maitreyi volunteer is called a befriender. Yes, volunteering is open to everyone. The only conditions are that one must be atleast 20 years of age, know Tamil (essential) and have an empathic and open mind about people and their problems.

Please ring us at (0413) 233 9999 between 2 PM and 8 PM on any day or mail us to set up and appointment to discuss how you can become a volunteer of Maitreyi.

I cannot volunteer as I don't know tamil or I am quite busy at work at the moment....

You could choose to support us financially. As you know, Maitreyi functions entirely on public donations. The core work of befriending is done free of cost by our volunteers. However, overheads are a necessary part of today's life and we need funds to pay for these - eletricity, phone bills, stationery, awareness programmes, et cetera.

Donations can be made by demand drafts or cheques in favour of 'Maitreyi, Puducherry'. Maitreyi is a registered society under the Soceities Registration Act, 1860.

All donations are exempt from Income Tax in India under section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
