Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), a quaint township 160 kms south of Chennai (Madras), on the east coast of Southern India, for its population and size, has seen an unnerving trend in recent times. The suicide rate in Puducherry is the highest among towns in the world and as recently as 2001, was third among the states in India (58 per 1, 00,000, 2001). The need for a preventive and intervention strategy was felt by socially conscious citizens. Maitreyi was inaugurated on 27th January, 1993. Maitreyi is a voluntary, secular, non political and non profit oriented organisation, caring for the lonely, desperate, despairing, and the suicidal. The organisation is affiliated to the Befrienders India which is in turn affiliated to the Befrienders Worldwide , based in the United Kingdom. The organisation has been registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The centre is run with the help of volunteers, having basic qualities of warmth, tolerance and concern for human values. The volunteers are from various walks of life, who are carefully selected and trained by experienced persons from Maitreyi and other organisations. Maitreyi is entirely run by public and corporate donations, whose contributions in keeping the service active in Puducherry are gratefully acknowledged.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has come up with the data and statistics on accidental and suicidal deaths in India for the year 2005. The flip side is that Suicide is still considered a crime, the pro is that the NCRB is improving the data collection and statistical analysis with each passing year. We do have to concede that availability of good statistics will help us advocate for more services and support from the government and the community in general. |

The official website for Maitreyi was launched on World Suicide Prevention day, 10/09/2007. The launch was well received by the media in Pondicherry.
